About the OpiSafe Study

Test a system to prescribe opioids safely and improve patient outcomes (funded by COPIC Medical Foundation)

Treating chronic pain with opioids is common practice. There's guides, checklists, forms and the PDMP to help improve care and outcomes. They're also cumbersome, underutilized and many patients have suboptimal pain relief or become addicted. How can you prescribe opioids in a way that is safe, effective and trackable?

We're Seeking:

100 Colorado physicians who treat patients with chronic pain and prescribe opioids to at least some of them (for 30 days or more).

What we need from you:

  • Agree to enroll at least six patients with chronic pain (ages 15-89) over a six-month period (one per month)
  • Use the OpiSafe tool for six months:
    • Simple, one-time "onboarding" takes 5-7 minutes for a new patient.
    • Online "dashboard" to view between-visit progress, patient outcomes and aberrancies.
  • If randomly chosen (10 percent of participating physicians), allow research assistant to visit practice and review small sample of chronic pain patient charts.
  • Informed consent (done by research team) will include patient approval of the chart review.
  • Participation in a post-study survey or focus group of the utility of OpiSafe in your practice.

What you get:

Six months of free use of OpiSafe in your practice, enabling you to perform guideline-adherent, safe and effective opioid prescribing for your patients, including:

  • Pain, function, opioid misuse risk and risk stratification at baseline
  • Automated PDMP checking (never check the PDMP again, OpiSafe does it for you)
  • Guideline-recommended monitoring, all done by OpiSafe (via patient app or web, no staff involvement needed)
  • Clinical decision support dashboard for you to view/use at later visits
  • Unlimited tech support for OpiSafe download, installation and use
  • Ability to bill for some of the assessments given by OpiSafe
  • # COPIC Risk Reduction points for study participation (for COPIC-insured physicians)
